Document Summary
Climbing jacob"s ladder: slavery from the plantation to the auction block. Africans would kind of sell themselves into slavery: during the wars, they would take pows and sell them into slavery, but this is the only case, or if you are a criminal. They"d be placed in factories, or forts off the coast of africa. They"d often be branded before they got on the boat. They would try to escape very early on. The voyage took about 2-3 months, the shortest is about 40 days and the longest is 6 months. The ships would be over packed by large margins. They were fed twice a day in shifts. There were only about 3-4 buckets for bathroom necessities. Women were often raped on the voyage. They were exercised, hair was dyed, blemished were covered up. The white south: king cotton, social groups. Planters: head of plantation wasn"t there very often, there would be an overseer or apprentice.
