Scotus will not take a case if it believes the lower court has made a mistake. Petition for writ of certiorari- an order sent from a higher court to a lower one that orders the lower court to turn over transcripts and documents related to a specific case for review. About 50% of scotus cases are unanimous. Once the court grants review, attorneys submit written arguments (briefs) Justice thomas is known for not uttering a syllable. Terms of court begin the 1st monday of october and usually ends mid to late june. A sitting occurs when the court is in session. No one is allowed in the clerk room except justices. Idea of similarly situated people- all other blacks who wanted to attend desegregated schools. Succeeded in getting scotus to outlaw segregation in public schools. Pit the value of equality against the value of freedom. Scotus carried the banner of racial equality by striking down state-mandated segregation in public schools.
