Grow more in less developed countries because the people do not live as long, not as much access to water and food, higher crime rates, poor economic development. Children consume more than they produce = strain on resources. High demand for jobs for child population but will unlikely exist when they get older. Harmful effect of the health of children and women (malnutrition; continuous childbearing of women) Cannot support a high level of economic growth. Can lead to an aging population and fewer young people entering the labor market. United states problem with ss system. Developed countries = reduction in the death rate is gradual. Developing countries = drop in death rate is sharper. Reduced economic incentive for having many children. Effective family program and modern contraceptives are available. Indian states passed laws requiring sterilization and/or imprisonment for those couples who bore more than two or three children. Belief that a large population is necessary for economic development.
