This course examines the origins and history of blues music, its african elements, and dissemination as they relate to race, ethnicity, social class, gender, and other central issues and media of 20th century america. The student will be able to define the basic vocabulary for the description of music. The student will gain the skills needed to listen actively to live and recorded performances of music. Students will study and analyze various blues styles from throughout blues history. The student will be able to recognize selected musical compositions from the classic.
