ARTH 12001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: National Gallery Of Art, Harbaville Triptych, Byzantine Architecture
Document Summary
The year 843 heralded the second golden age of byzantium, or the byzantium renaissance. The largest and most lavishly decorated church of this period is st. mark"s in venice, italy. Built to hold the body of st. mark, church construction began in 1063. It has several domes, and is loaded with brilliant mosaics both inside and out. Byzantine architecture style spread throughout europe and into the center of russia. Churches were often made of wood rather than brick, while the interiors still glowed with mosaics and paintings of religious people. The most famous of the russian churches is the cathedral of st. It has a large number of onion shaped domes surrounding a central structure, and is painted in vivid colors. Byzantine artists had a strong tradition of painting mostly religious icons on wooden panels. They used egg tempera, and often painted figures against a gold background.
