Nile is the world"s longest river: flows south north. Flooding keeps the land fertile: 1970 dam river. Provides access to the sea international trade, transportation, communications throughout the empire. Mummification takes ~70 days: natron salt dehydrates body. Amulets- protection from evil: some have protective spells placed upon them, regeneration, protection from drowning, protection, strength, perfection. Canopic jars- four sons of horace are on the lids: man, baboon, jakal, hawk: protect organs for use in the after life, keep heart in the body because they believed it was the source of the soul. Rosetta stone- 11 inches wide: decree issued by priests at memphis honoring ptolrmy v, carved in hieroglyphics, demotic(simplified cursive form of hieroglyphics), and greek, champollion located names for cleopatra and ptolemy. He could then build up an alphabet of hieroglyphoics. Ancient egyptian language dies out after greek arrival in 332bce. The palette of marmer- early dynastic period 2950 bce.
