Characteristics of romanesque: feudalism, pilgrimages, crusades, universities. Universities develop- oxford, cambridge, university of paris, bologna: depending on year of founding can apply to romanesque or gothic. Feudalism- nobility owns land worked by serfs and vassals: as early as 850, as late as 1400"s become popular for religion, prayer, penance, cure for illness. Jerusalem(the western wall the last wall of the original temple), st. peters, santiago de compostela(tomb of apostle saint james), mecca ka"aba: shell indicates pilgrimage to santiago de compostela. Reliquary- containers holding holy bones, cloth, or relics from holy figures: st. foy"s remains- faith killed as a child for not worshiping roman pagan gods o. Some believe larger sins lead to larger pilgrimages. See relics: bones of a saint, part of holy veils . Crusades- soldiers from western europe go to save the holy land from muslims: taking up the cross, holy land jerusalem, if you die during the crusades you become a martyr.
