BSCI 10001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Gregor Mendel, Punnett Square, Sickle-Cell Disease
Document Summary
Evolution and genetics are the two pillars on which modern biology has been built. Before we start our discussion of mendel"s work, we will first take another look at evolution. At the beginning of the semester we talked a little bit about the geological record of evolution- the fossil evidence of early life in rocks of known age. Scientists knew about the fossil record in darwin"s time, and they knew that it showed evidence for ancient life forms that no longer existed. But no one had an idea about how this evolution could occur. The first biologist to try to explain evolution was lamarck. Actually the selective value of a longer neck is not (or not entirely) in being able browse for food on high branches; it is used by male giraffes to fight with each other in the competition for female giraffes!
