Ageism: systematic stereotyping of and discrimination against people because they are old, similar to racism or sexism: occurs when there is any prejudice or discrimination against or in favor of an age group, ex. Older adult may internalize these attitudes: people telling old people negative stuff constantly. Behavioral: discrimination, don"t hire, drive them out, inappropriate negative treatment, problematic. At some point, we will all be vulnerable to the effects of ageism. Prevents full participation in: social networks, occupation, families. Intersects with other systems of inequality: discrimination against race, gender, sexual orientation, double jeopardy. Isolation from the community: build retirement homes away from city. Inadequate housing and income: sometimes hard to survive, unnecessary institutionalization, think they need help, when in reality, they don"t, untreated mental and physical illnesses, drs overlook their pain due to aging. Tendency to help older adults because all older people must need help (ex. Of ageism: too helpful becomes problematic, ageisms takes forms, media, relationships, healthcare, workplace.
