Social convoy (kahn & antonucci: less close network members, ex. Extended family, other friends, neighbors, co workers, etc: closest network members, ex. Spouse, parents, child, siblings, close friends: distant members, ex. acquaintances. Gender differences in social networks: women: larger networks, receive support, cost of caring greater relationships burdens, more people depend when larger network, men: smaller networks, wife primary confidante, less support from friends. Size of network decreases with age: life transitions, death of loved one. Little change in the quality of support receive: members of the network change. Reasons people engage in social relationships: adults actively select their social network members, maintain rewarding relationships, discard problematic relationships. Two types of social goals: knowledge-focused, to acquire knowledge & information about the social world, example: potential partners, future career, emotion-focused, to regulate emotion, maintain intimacy, example: emotional intimacy. Perception of time: predicts which social goals individuals actively pursue. Time as expansive: future oriented, pursue knowledge-focused goals, desire large, varied social networks.
