Welfarism: some basic intuitions: welfare a matter of prudential value. Indicates how well your life is going for you: perspectival character of welfare, not (directly) a matter of aesthetic value or moral value. If i decide to sacrifice my welfare for someone else, this decision may have moral value, but this should not imply it increases my welfare. If your needs are not met, your life in that respect not going well (and can be improved: what counts as a need is context dependent. In tune with ideal of autonomous, self-directing, self-shaping, agentive individuals. It may even be we do not want states to take an authoritative position on that: ideal of the neural liberal state: politically promoting wellbeing will (probably) have to take another approach than directly promoting or maximizing wellbeing.
