Document Summary

The ultimate promise of materialism is to explain how the brain produces the whole range of human mental processes. Split brain research is particularly interesting for the unity of consciousness and the possible bimodal nature of consciousness, thus the possibility of a dual consciousness, meaning two independent centers of consciousness. The brain: it consists of three major parts the central core, the limbic system and the cerebrum. The cerebrum is divided into two hemispheres, connected via a neural bundle which is called the corpus callosum. The hemispheres have different functions: both are important in memory storage, working in conjunction with the limbic system. The left one is responsible for language understanding and production, whereas the right hemisphere is the creative part. The hemispheres are organized in a contralateral organization, meaning that the left one analyzes stimuli and controls actions of the right side of the body, whereas the right on does it for the left side.
