Document Summary
Must ensure that it makes sense to discuss ethics in an academic context and that it is possible before we begin. 5 threats to ethics (the last 2 discussed in blackburn not as relevant) If you endorse these threats, you would be concluding that it doesn"t make sense to discuss ethics. General idea = if the lawmaker is gone then so are the laws (context: ethics and religion were strongly related in the past) If you challenge the existence of god, are you challenging moral norms too? assumption of direct relation between the lawmaker (here: god) and the moral laws. General idea = if ethics depends on which culture you come from and certain actions are reduced to customs, then it doesn"t make sense to do ethics. Ethical subjectivism: relativism on an individual level, argues that you cannot formulate moral rules that apply to everybody because it"s a matter of taste/ feeling.
