Summery book; a first look at communication theory. In this chapter all the definitions are relevant. Burgoon: a set of systematic, informed hunches about the way things work. (hunches = feeling, intuition, not sure that you have the answer) Theories always involve an element of speculation, they sometimes go beyond excepted wisdom. A theory needs to have plural hunches , good theories define their key terms (so the hunches need to be informed). A good theory lays out multiple ideas and the relationships among them. The theorist should be familiar with alternative explanations and interpretations. Communication is the relational process of creating and interpreting messages that elicit a response. Text is a synonym for a message that can be studied: creation of messages. Constructed, invented, planned, crafted, constituted, selected and adopted by communicator. To fix that you have to raise consciousness. Either conscious or unconscious: interpretation of messages.
