During the ancien regime under louis 14th everyone competed for the king"s attention, because the monarch had the final say and was the ultimate authority. This is a system which historians call absolutism this term is used to describe a system where the monarch has absolute power. The king was at the top, followed by the nobles and then peasants. This hierarchy was long lasting and present across the continent. Peasants would sometimes revolt against this; 374 revolts were recorded from 1596 to: but although the masses had the numbers, they didn"t have the weapons or the organisation to pose a challenge to the king. Revolts were generally justified by the restoration of the status quo. It was common to restore food prices which would result in potential issues.
