Document Summary

One of the biggest problems companies face is coping with the abundance of technologies in the marketplace; it"s hard for executives to figure out what all those systems do and which to purchase. Executives try to delegate, outsource, rent, rationalize, and generally remove it from their already long list of concerns; corporate it projects have often delivered underwhelming results. Executives have three roles to play in managing it: they must (1) help select technologies, (2) nurture their adoption, and (3) ensure their exploitation. Managers needn"t do all roles; different types of it results in different kinds of organizational change, so executives must tailor their roles to the technology they"re using. It is critical that executives stop looking at it projects as technology installations and start looking at them as periods of organizational change that they have a responsibility to manage. Besides an it department, line managers have important responsibilities implementing projects.
