ENG ELC 220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: Ad Hominem, Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company
Document Summary
All communication involves some degree of collaboration between the senders and receivers of messages. If you persuade somebody, you have succeeded in aligning their position with yours. Relative to other forms of appeal, not to mention coercion, persuasion pays greater attention to the receiver"s attitudes towards the sender"s aims. It accordingly provides arguments and reasons for the receiver to want the same thing. Persuasive communication is a powerful toll for achieving influence and change. Understanding the audience"s needs and wants is even more important when attempting to persuade than when sending other types of messages. Whoever the target of the attempt at persuasion may be, they will only be persuaded if the message is in accord with their requirements. In order to successfully resist persuasion, it is essential to appreciate how it works and to understand the linguistic devices an experienced persuader will employ. Persuasion may involve the use of non-verbal tools such as body language and facial expression.
