GEOLOGY 002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Move, Nucleolus, Microtubule
Document Summary
Continuity of life based on cell division = reproduction of cells: crucial feature = passing identical genetic material (dna) to cellular offspring. Cell cycle - life of cell from time it is first formed during division of a parent cell until its own division into 2 daughter cells. All dna must be copied/replicated before cell division manageable because: chromatin - entire complex of dna & proteins that is building material of chromosomes, associated proteins maintain structure of chromosome & help control gene activity. Mitotic phase (m) shortest phase of cell cycle includes mitosis & cytokinesis. Frequency of cell division varies w/ cell type. Cell cycle control system cyclically operating set of molecules in cell that triggers & coordinates key events in cell cycle. Checkpoint - control point where stop & go-ahead signals can regulate the cycle important ones in g1, g2 & m phases cell cycle regulated by internal & external signals e. g. growth factor.
