Security debates what is it about life that is to be secured; why some deaths are to be avoided but others are seen as necessary. Security meaning in academic usage the protection of something that is valued e. g. physical life, the organisation of political life in the nation-station, democracy, identity, language, territory etc. Some degree of protection of value previously acquired" (wolfers,1952) this separates security from power and wealth. A contested concept the different definitions of security contain an ideological element, empirical analysis is not enough to produce agreement: security as a condition. The condition of security is existence without threats to existence or to things of value. Booth (2007) security is survival plus; the plus is having life choices. Survival is absolute (you either survive or not) security is not; different levels of security enjoyed by different surviving people. Realists -security is the most important value to states.
