Document Summary

Syntax studies = structure of phrases and sentences. Morphology = study of the structure of word forms. Phonetics and phonology = the study of human speech sounds and their systematic organisation in individual languages, such as english. System of linguistic knowledge native speakers of a language posses. Linguistic performance is what happens when we use language, i. e. when we put our linguistic competence to work in order to speak and comprehend a language. Linguistic competence is stored in the mind in the form of a mental grammar and a lexicon. It can be influenced by psychological or physiological factors (distraction, alcohol, brain damage, etc. ) It is acquired naturally by native speakers, not thought. It is characterised by variation (individual, social and over time) Most people are not explicitly aware of rules of their mental grammar but intuitively know how to use it. In this sense, linguistics is a scientific discipline.
