MARKET 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Somatic Nervous System, Midbrain, Basal Ganglia
Document Summary
Introduction to psychology 1: cognitive and biological psychology. The brain"s surface features: the brain is composed of 2 hemispheres. Has the shape of a walnut and is the size of a coconut: the gyri (hill tops) and sulci (valleys) are visible when the skull is opened, but their appearance gives little information about their function. The surface landmarks of each individual"s brain are slightly different, but the main wrinkles are common to all and are used as landmarks: cerebrospinal fluid (csf) acts as a cushion between the skull and the brain. Biological psychology lecture 4: the organisation of the nervous system. The brainstem includes: hindbrain (including cerebellum), midbrain, diencephalon (including thalamus, hypothalamus and pituitary). It evolved more than 500 million years ago and is rather like the entire brain of a present-day reptile. Composed of nerves that run up from the body into the brain.
