Some of the liberals thought that the south should be respected william gladstone was on record supporting the south. The people that were most affected by the north blockade were the workers of the textile mills protested in favour of the north because they believed slavery was a bad thing. Originally, northerners were seen against slavery but were not free from racist attitudes. They wanted to end slavery because it threatened free workers as well, they will lose when competing with slave labour. In the north there are quite a few free black people as they go south they attempt to free slaves. There is a lot of resistance in the north in terms of recruiting black soldiers they were worried it would give more ammunition to the south.
