MATH 190 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Lateral Geniculate Nucleus, Lightdark, Thalamus
Document Summary
Retina: located at the back of the eye. It contains photoreceptors that are specialized to convert light energy into neural activity. In a sense, each eye two overlapping retinas: one that is specialized for in darker situation and one for higher light levels and fr the detection of colour. The most obvious part of the retina are the blood vessels on its surface. These retinal vessels come from a pale circular region called the optic disk, which is also the where the optic nerve fibers exit the retina. In the place of the optic disk and the vessels there cannot be sensation of light, because there are no photoreceptors or there is shadow from the vessels. The macula is the part of the retina where there are relatively few vessels. Fovea : dark spot that marks the middle of the retina and for that it is a good anatomical reference point.
