It can be antagonist, that means the drugs inhibit the effect of a particular neurotransmitter. There are 5 neurotransmitters involved in the process of drugs. Dopamine is involved in drive, desire and perhaps of rewards. It seems to play a key part in the addiction because it release in special brains region when we feel in sense of rewards and we will be more able to repeat the activity in the future. Endorphins give peace and pleasure and reduce suffering and numb pain. Gaba turn off the brain and glutamate turn on the glutamate turn on the brain. Serotonin may be involved in attributing meaning to experience. Noradrenaline seems to be related to impulsivity and compulsivity. There is 4 main classes of drugs: opioids, stimulants, depressant and psychedelics.
