NURS 4430 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Tachycardia, Peripheral Edema, Baroreceptor
Document Summary
Results in vasodilation with little effect on the heart. Immediate release formulation can cause rapid drop in blood pressure, triggering baroreceptor reflex and causing tachycardia. Often ccb for bp is administered with a beta blocker to prevent reflex tachycardia. Results in vasodilation and decreased heart rate (sa node conduction), decreased av node conduction, and decreased contractility. Net effects are decreased blood pressure, decreased myocardial oxygen demand and increased coronary artery perfusion. Indicated for treatment of hypertension, angina and cardiac dysrhythmias. *cannot use beta blocker to treat reflex tachycardia with these will cause profound. Can cause complete heart block via altered av node conduction.
