Kansas holds election in 1854/1855 hundreds of missourians cross border to vote illegally. Kansas civil war (>200 deaths, city of lawrence burned) Brooks (south carolina) beats sumner (missouri) unconscious because sumner denounced the violence as caused by slaveholders/slavery. Violent deadlock over constitution (free vs. slave) Kansas awaited state vote until january 29th, 1861 (admitted as free state) 1830s accompanies slaveholder to illinois and wisconsin on long- term business. Upon return, scott sues for his freedom argues temporary residence in north made him a free man. Supreme court (1857) decides 2 days before buchanan inaugurated. Only white people can be u. s. citizens. Scott is still a slave illinois law does not apply now that he"s in missouri (despite over 20 years of living in a free state) Wisconsin and illinois law did not apply because those laws were part of an old compromise resisting slaveholders" rights to take enslaved people west in unconstitutional.
