500,000 enslaved people (about 20% of the population) by 1776. Viewed revolutionary ideas as a chance for freedom. White leaders in america saw self-government as a method to protect property. Had a blind spot: women and african americans. An enslaved person sues for their freedom. Most enslaved people were only 1-2 generations removed from africa (americanized africans) Some slaves petitioned for their freedom successfully. Many plantations in the south (and north) were destroyed in the battle. Deep south rebuilt their land, the north did not. All states north of maryland move toward emancipation. Abolition draws the line between free and slave states. Massachusetts defines slaves as both property and a person. Women were not actively allowed to service. Women speak about politics with their husbands in private. For men politics = freedom to self-govern. Grounded theories of natural law and religion.
