Middle and late childhood - ages of 7-11. Growth averages 2-3 inches per year, 5-7 pounds. Girls usually outperform boys in fine motor skills. Leading cause of death - accidents (typically motor vehicle accidents) Second leading cause of death in children 5-14 years old. Children with cancer are surviving longer, advancements in treatment. Difficulty in learning that involves understanding or using spoken or written language. Can appear in listening, thinking, reading, writing, and spelling. Dyslexia - severe impairment in the ability to read and spell. Characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity (at least one to be considered to have adhd) Number of children diagnosed has increased dramatically within the last decade. Diagnosed four to nine times more often in boys than girls. There may be an increase in children that are misdiagnosed. Range from autistic disorder (more severe) to asperger syndrome (milder) Autistic disorder - onset in the first three years of life.
