Document Summary

The integument: body"s largest organ, protects internal body structures, accounts for 7-8% of body weight, composed of. Surface covered by an epithelium: underlying connective tissue, provides strength and resilience contains smooth muscle associated with hair follicles, provides information about touch, pressure, temperature, and pain, nervous tissue: Epidermis: dermis, keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, keratinized are dead cells full of protein, deeper layer, primarily dense irregular connective tissue. Termed subcutaneous layer or hypodermis: deep to dermis, not part of the integumentary system, closely involved with structure and function of skin. Termed epidermis: keratinized, stratified squamous epithelium, consists of specific layers, or strata, avascular; nourished by diffusion from capillaries of the papillary layer of the dermis, composed of epithelial cells arranged into layers or strata. Produce keratin for strength: melanocytes: contribute to skin color. Melanin produced by these cells then transferred to keratinocytes. Langerhans cells: part of the immune system: merkel cells: detect light, touch, and superficial pressure.
