Years: generally preschool years or two years before entering school (around 3-5 years old) Preschoolers are busy bee"s, they can walk and talk now without concentrating, so now they can really concentrate on play (ex. block, drawing and coloring, pretend play, riding bikes, and digging in dirt) Because they are having all of these experiences during play, they are getting to hear all kinds of new words, grammatical constructions, and language functions: decontextualized language. Contextualized language grounded in the here and now; your immediate context/situation. Decontextualized language relies on the construction of meaning in the language; it is more abstract (construction of language child must use highly precise syntax and vocabulary to represent events beyond the here and now) The use of decontextualized language is important for future academic success: emergent literacy: earliest period about learning about reading and writing and these skills rely heavily on oral language learned in infancy and toddlerhood.
