SPCH 418 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Developmental Lines
Document Summary
Chapter 11 (study guide for last half of chapter) Teach inflectional suffixes first, followed by derivational suffixes, and finally prefixes. Have to use a conversational approach when teaching and it has to be tied to context to make sense. Able, -ance, -er, -est then a-. bi-, mis-, post: verb tensing. Art projects and building toys (legos, building blocks) are good too! Begin with simple verbs, then move to verb+ ing, then to past tense, future tense. During training, use questions such as: what do dogs do? (bark, lick, eat) What did the dog just do? (ate, barked, licked) Here you are training along developmental lines in a hierarchy with those questions as each verb tense is learned. Make sure child has a good repertoire of verbs before moving on to a different tense. Remember, they need to comprehend it as well as produce it: pronouns. Teach in a sequence that approximates typical development.
