It is a set of spoken or written symbols bound by rules that are used by people to communicate with one another. Rule ex. -grammar, same language: 4 characteristics of language, a system of symbols. Our code is made up of symbols made up of phonemes (sound found in language) combined to form morphemes (smallest unit of meaning) so we can communicate with one another. Phonemes and morphemes are used to make words and translate into meaning. Referent relationship what you"re referring to when you speak the object, thought, or feeling that the word refers to. Our language is a rule governed system that governs our sounds into words, words into sentences, and sentences into a narrative. How the rules are applied to our language. When rules are violated it calls attention to itself: a tool for human communication.
