Document Summary
Cognitive restructuring is the emotional process teachers need to engage in to become culturally responsive and racially aware. This process comprises two dimensions self-reflection and exploration. Self-reflection is essential in order for teachers to examine their attitudes and beliefs about themselves and others and understand why they are who they are, with the ultimate goal of confronting biases influencing their value system. 5 ways of learning: observation, participation, revelation, taught by master, self-reflection. We view the world through cultural lenses: family sitting in living room/under a tree. Salad bowl (current) different pieces remain themselves in one place. Race relations: contact, conquest, migration immigration forced migration, involuntary migration. The terminology we use to discuss these issues and concepts shapes our paradigm, and hides the power component. Ten rules of sociology as it applies to the epistemology of ignorance : detachment, evasion, transcendation, sophism, inverted metric, the moral calculus, a historian, reductionism, racial optic, vilify the racist.
