Document Summary
2/13/12: cultural- behavior modification in response to stress, acclimatization physiological - an individual response to an environmental pressure that is involuntary, temporary, and reversible, ex. Sunburn, increased sweating: developmental- happens at the individual level and is observable at the population level. The ability to respond to stress is inherited, and the response occurs during critical periods of growth. The response is irreversible and long term: ex. High altitude increases size of heart, lung, chest etc. to compensate for lack of oxygen availability in smaller organs: genetic- a long term, irreversible, inherited response that characterizes a population regardless of location, ex. Skin color: purpose to maintain homeostasis- the ability of an organism to maintain equilibrium. Equatorial regions are home to people with the darkest skin colors. Regardless of skin color, melanocytes are the same. Some, however, are larger and produce more melanin.
