Document Summary

Lecture 5: introduction to archaeology, louisiana state university, heather. Angle: degrees east or west of direction in which transit is set up. To make a topographic map of a site (natural and cultural) To set out and map places to excavate. Stadia rod has metric measurements on it (archaeology is mostly metric) Read the number on the stadia rod where central stadia hair crosses. Compare the number with the instrument (transit) height. If you"re high, it"ll be a low number, if you"re down low, it"ll be high. Count the numbers between the central and upper or central and lower stadia hairs and multiply by 200, or read between the upper and lower hairs and multiply by 100. Lines are contour lines and they show elevation. Far apart lines is a gentle slope, ones together is steeper. Contour lines are places of equal elevation, therefore, they cannot intersect. Look at your site and select contour interval appropriate to show elevation differences.
