ANTH 2015 Lecture : Anthropology 2015 Intro Notes
Document Summary
Anthropology 2015:introduction to archaeology, louisiana state university, heather mckillop. Archaeological record: the name denoting the more or less continuous distribution of artifacts over the earth"s surface, in highly variable densities, the ground, where you find things, artifacts, remains, people, etc, where you get your evidence-includes soil. What holds artifacts: lewis binford, challenged the assumption that because archaeological record is incomplete, reliable interpretation was impossible. All artifacts found in a site function at one time in a particular culture. 9-20-11: data relevant to most, if not all, of the components of past sociocultural systems are preserved in the archaeological record. Pseudoarchaeologists: erich von daniken, nazca lines, peru, parallel lines of stone placed by people. Designs, paths, only can be seen from above. Von daniken said they were landing strips for aliens: didn"t give full evidence, could be seen from distant village foothills. Found similar: thor hyerdahl, easter islands 1,000 miles west of peru images there.
