Document Summary
C h a p t e r 4. Sons of liberty no taxation without representation ; protestors met underneath. Liberty trees in boston a great elm, in charleston and south carolina a live oak: boston massacre (1770) March 5, 1770 crowds gathering around the customs house chanting angrily at the redcoat officials stationed there pelting them with snow, and stones from the cobblestone street. Until finally the soldiers had enough and when one fired they all did killing 5 bostonians. The eight british soldiers were arrested and tried defended by john adams, who claimed that the soldiers had fired in self-defense. Facts are stubborn things and whatever may be our wishes they cannot alter the state of facts. This was a propaganda victory for the sons of liberty because it ultimately causes the british to back down, leaving only the tax on tea, leading the colonists to smuggle dutch tea: paxton boys.
