Varying degrees of realism: example of a trompe-l"oeil (fool-the-eye) painting. Chronology and terminology: paleolithic period = early stone age, mesolithic period = middle stone age, neolithic period = late stone age, monolith = a single, large stone. Paleolithic cave painting: hunting iconography predominates (mammoth, bison, reindeer); spears and traps; occasional hand prints. Structural characteristics: post and lintel or post and beam structure and the physical forces at work on it.
