Document Summary
The cell membrane is usually the outermost barrier of the cell. An exception to this is found in cells which have a cell wall: plants-cellulose, fungi-chitin, bacteria-chitin plus proteins. The cell wall is mainly for structural support and protection. It usually doesn"t act as a barrier to molecules. Water is going to go in both directions equally. The mass of the cell won"t change: a solution of equal osmotic pressure. 40mm sucrose solution is isotonic to a 40 mm. Net movement of water would be equal. The cell won"t gain or lose water. The mass of the cell won"t change: hypertonic is a solution with a greater concentration of solute than another solution, the inside of the cell is hypertonic to the outside of the cell. Water rushes in and the cell gains mass. It is a hypotonic environment compared to a hyper tonic cell.
