BIOL 1001 Lecture : Notes Pulled From Book Chap One
Document Summary
Claims as many as 2 million lives annually. Officials concerned it will mutate into more infectious form. One of the world"s most deadly pathogens: scientific principles. Redi observed that flies swarm around meat left in the open and that maggots appear soon after. During redis time, the appearance of maggots on meat was considered spontaneous generation. Redi sought to find the true reason behind the appearance of maggots. To set up an experiment, redi placed two identical jars (with identical pieces of meat inside) out in the open. One jar had a covering so flies could not get in while the other was completely open. After leaving the jars in the open for several days, redi returned to find that the jar that was sealed off contained no maggots, while the open jar was full of them. This experiment supported redis hypothesis that flies are the source of maggots.
