Innate immunity - fights off broad range of assaults on the body. Does not target one specific pathogen: external defenses - things that generally keep infectious organisms out, skin, mucous membranes, secretions. Internal defenses - fights infection from the inside: phagocytoic cells, antimicrobial proteins. Keeps pathogens out of interstitial fluids: continuously shed, removing microbes that gain a foothold on skin. Any bacterium or fungus that lands on the skin will be shed off with the skin: many skin secretions contain natural antibiotics, give the skin a ph between 3-5, also has lysozyme. Cilia keeps mucous up toward the pharynx and mouth. Any micro organism trapped in the mucus will be kept away from the lungs.
