BIOL 1002 Lecture : Biology 1002 Final Notes
Document Summary
Water retention in shoot system, aided by waxy cuticle. Cells with unevenly thickened walls that lack lignin. Grouped into strands or cylinders to aid support without constricting growth. Give strength and support to fully grown parts of the plant. Sclereids cause hardness to nutshells and the gritty texture to pears. Primary growth in roots lengthens roots from the tips. Root tip includes meristem cells: undifferentiated plant cells. Root cap protects the meristem, continually sloughs off. Cells elongate, then mature and differentiate into final cell type. Becomes the epidermis, may turn into root hairs. Become either xylem or phloem, known as vascular stele. Regulate the flow of substances into the vascular tissues of the stele. Waxy layer the fills in the gap between cells. Disallows flow of substances except through the endodermal cells themselves. Primary growth in shoots lengthens shoots from the tips. Apical meristem produces the same three primary meristems as in the roots.
