Document Summary

Slide 2: there are some characteristics that came from england that affected our american sports. Some sports were divided by classes (lower class-boxing, cock fighting, etc. upper class- hockey, cricket, rugby, and any type of team sport popularized by the boy"s boarding schools). They were into educating boys and not as focused on the girls: philosophies- through sports, boys can learn moral virtues (leadership, sportsmanship, cooperation). Another one was the british amateur sport ideal- playing for the sake of playing the game as opposed to playing for money or for glory. They drew a line between amateur sports/athletes and professional athletes who did it for money (considered tainted, and not idealized at the beginning): britain had many colonies throughout the world, and sport was spread through the british military. It was very popular for the scots to go out and play.
