Document Summary
The territorial issue ii: compromise of 1850, after the mexican war, the issue with territory is with the property not yet organized. Some type of government was needed in these places: president taylor was a native virginia, moved to kentucky, but lived in louisiana. He was a military man and never in politics. He was elected for being a hero in the mexican. In the north, he was seen as a military man and bipartisan. Southern whig loved him since he was a southern, slave-owning planters and they figured he would protect their interest: he didn"t" turn out like the southern whigs wanted. Taylor said a state can do what it wants. He takes california territory and breaks it up into two states. California will come in as a state then the rest is new mexico and they can organize later. Southerners were pissed: taylor supported slavery, but not the expansion of slavery.
