Document Summary

In phospholipids the hydrophilic head interacts with water and the hydrophobic tail repels. Steroids: class of lips that include many hormones. Made from a component called cholesterol: characterized by a carbon skeleton consisting of 4 fused rings with various functional groups attached, cholesterol, estrogen, testosterone are all steroids. Proteins: the molecular tools for most cellular functions, arranged into smaller groups called amino acids which are held together by peptide bonds, each protein has a unique sequence of amino acids, 20 amino acids in the body. Every protein is made from these: amino acids are monomer building blocks. Primary structure- the sequence of amino acids linked by peptide bonds, determined by the genes, and determines all the remaining structure: 2. Secondary structure- maintained by hydrogen bonds, which shape a helix, cause by hydrogen bonds and helps stabilize the protein structure. Irregular contortion of a protein backbone due to bonding or interactions between side chains.
