Document Summary

Atom: smallest unit of matter: cannot be broken down further without losing the quality of the element. Parts of an atom: nucleus (protons[+] and neutrons[neutral], electrons move around the nucleus (negative) Atomic weight (mass: number of protons and neutrons. Isotopes are atoms with different number of neutrons in their nuclei. Electron configurations: electrons are arranged in electron shells-regions of differend energy levels, lowest energy. Chemical properties of atoms is function of electrons in the outer-most shell. All atoms tend to combine so that the extra electrons in the outermost shell of one atom fills the spaces of the outermost shell of the other atom. Valence-combining capacity=number of extra or missing electrons in its outermost electron shell. A compound is formed when atoms of two or more elements interact with on another to achieve stability. Chemical bonds are the linkages within compound or molecules. Molecular formula is symbolization of the atoms in a molecule.
