Osmosis: the net movement of water across (through) a semi-permeable membrane, terminology of solutions. Water leaves the cell: a single-celled freshwater organism, such as a paramecium, is transferred to saltwater. What is cystic fibrosis: recessive genetic disease, thick mucus builds up, salty tasting skin, debilitating and lessens life span, mucus in lungs build up and causes lung infections, cl- transporter, digestive problems. Passive transport: diffusion of substances across the membrane down their concentration gradient; does not require the cell to expend energy. Permeases: membrane bound proteins that facilitate the movement of molecules across the membrane categorized by energy use. Other movements into a cell: vesicle: mediated transport, endocytosis, exocytosis, not movement through a membrane. Endocytosis: cell engulfs object, becomes membrane bound vesicle. Exocytosis: membrane bound vesicle fuse with cell membrane and expel contents.
