Last Notes before Final Exam 2018
Cell Signaling
Direct Contact:
o One cell physically contacts another
Local:
o one cell signals cell in adjacent area
o Paracrine and synaptic signaling
Distant:
o Hormone signals

Only pages 1-3 are available for preview. Some parts have been intentionally blurred.

Stages of Cell Signaling
Apply to all types of signaling
Signal Reception
o Most of the receptors are proteins bound in the plasma membrane
Q: What does this tell us about specificity of receptors? Highly Specific
Q: What does this tell us about the properties? Because they are in the membrane, the signal
molecules cannot pass through membrane by themselves, that why they need receptors
o Some receptors are located in the cytoplasm
Q: What does this tell us about the properties of these signals? They are membrane permeable
and are almost always steroids.
Transduction
o The action or process of converting signals from one from to another
§ G Protein (activated with GDP)
§ Tyrosine Kinase
§ Ion-gated Channel
