BIOL 2051 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Symporter, Lipid Bilayer, Cytoplasmic Streaming
Document Summary
Made of lipids and proteins phospholipids form a bilayer with polar exterior and nonpolar interior very hydrophobic in the middle of the membrane, but very hydrophilic on the outsides. Some archaea don"t have a lipid bilayer biphytanyl. Covalent bonds all the way across, very very strong membrane. Some archaea that live in extreme conditions need this extremely strong membrane. In high temperatures, our lipid bilayers will peel apart, but covalent bonds will not. It surrounds the cell, and in many cases it is surrounded by the cell wall, but not always. In some cases it"s the last barrier between the inside and outside of the cell. It determines what comes in and what comes out. Using transport proteins food gets in and waste gets out. Very few things can pass through the membrane freely, hydrophilic things cant pass through a hydrophobic space.
