Physiology is the study of body functions; explain body functions in terms of cause-and-effect sequences: structure and function are inseparable. Levels of organization: chemical level a molecule in the membrane that encloses a cell, appendix a, cellular level cell in stomach lining, basic cell functions, obtaining food and oxygen from environment surrounding the cell. Stomach is made up of four primary types. Digestive system mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, salivary glands, exocrine pancreas, liver, and gallbladder. Break food down into small nutrient molecules that can be absorbed into the blood for distribution to all cells: organism level whole body. Homeostasis maintenance of a relatively stable internal environment. Energy, in turn, is needed to support life-sustaining and specialized cell activities: concentration of o2 and co2, concentration of waste products, ph, concentrations of water, salt, and other electrolytes, volume and pressure, temperature.
